Development of health social capital within the community, as an effective strategy for strengthening the system of nutritional recovery in San Marcos, Guatemala

TARGET: Prevention and treatment of malnutrition at the communities of Tacana, Sibinal and San José Ojetenam.
MAIN ACTIVITIES: We attended 158 mothers in gestation period and highly vulnerable; we also trained and guided families for the modification of habits of hygiene and food.
We provided care for 262 children under five years.
We created a net of 169 volunteers trained as promoters of rural health, whose main function is providing timely services to save lives. The volunteer health promoters provide counseling, training, primary health care and timely reference in their communities and surrounding communities.
IMPACT: We trained and attended mothers in gestation period for the modification of habits of hygiene and food, which are basic conditions for breaking the vicious circle of malnutrition. 59% of the 262 children under five years attended improved its indicators of weight, and 72% improved its indicators of size.
