FOSTERING RURAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH ENCOURAGING FORMAL EDUCATION

FABRE Foundation has supported 96 girls through the local FUNDAP NGO. The girls are from the departments of Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, Huehuetenango, Quiche, Totonicapán, San Marcos and Sololá in Guatemala. The expectation is for the girls to complete their primary education cycle since it has been demonstrated that if a girl abandons primary school, she has less than a 2% chance of reintegrating into either the technical or formal educational process. The girls receive support through training and counseling. One accomplishment has been that parents attended a training session for study helps given through the project where 73% participated. This helps the parents take an active role in the education of their children. This project encourages community development and strengthens the civil society through social participation. Through the commitment of parents and teachers to participate in the project, habits and dynamics of contributing and offering solutions for community problems are being created. The girls, as principal beneficiaries of the project, will be the motors of development for their own communities in the future.
